According to Aon Benfield’s Impact Forecasting, four separate waves of winter weather events caused a loss of 50 lives, an economic loss of an estimated $3.5 billion and insured losses of over $1.6 billion in the US this past month. And we’re not alone in that misery. Asia, South America, the Philippines, Tonga, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, France, and Scandinavia all had severe to catastrophic weather related events in January as well. According to Steve Bowen, senior scientist and meteorologist at Impact Forecasting, the current winter season in the U.S. has already become the costliest year for the winter weather peril since 2011.
