According to a tweet posted by the White House today, Minnesota has 138,702 miles of public roads - 11 percent of which are in poor condition and Minnesota has 13,137 bridges - 12 percent of which are considered structurally deficient.  They go on to say that if Congress fails to act, here are the very real consequences for Minnesota: 11,094 jobs will be jeopardized and 1,911 active highway and transit projects will be slowed or stopped. Our neighbors to the east, in Wisconsin are sitting at about 21% of their roads in poor condition and our neighbors to the west in both North and South Dakota are far better at just 6% of roads in poor condition. Not so much. In the past few years, the University of Utah Applied Cognition LabVirginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI)The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA), The National Safety Council (NSC) and most recently, the American Automobile Association (AAA) Foundation for Traffic Safety published reports on how multitasking effects drivers. The findings vary but the bottom line is the same: It doesn’t matter if your phone is in your hand or on your head; if your texts come from your fingers or your mouth. Make no mistake, these studies say, there is no safe way to do something else while you’re driving. That’s because safe diving doesn’t just mean using your eyes and your hands—it also means using you brain. veteransday2013

Veterans Day is an official United States holiday which honors people who have served in armed service. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect.) Honor those who have served by thanking a Veteran, especially today!
